Project Overview
Client: Whanganui District Council
Services: Commercial tree management and emergency response
Environment: Public parks, roads, and infrastructure assets
Work Type: Reactive maintenance through our CRM response, and storm response
Context
Whanganui District Council manages tree assets across parks, roads, and infrastructure where safety, response time, and coordination are critical.
Work is largely reactive and requires:
Timely response to public and safety-related issues
Coordination across multiple contractors and Council
Operation within live public environments
In February, a major storm event resulted in a significant increase in tree-related incidents across the district. This was a live, public-facing event requiring immediate response across multiple sites.
Approximately 90 incidents were logged
The majority involved fallen or damaged trees
Multiple public spaces and access routes were affected
Tree Truck crews were deployed from 3am during Civil Defence activation, undertaking immediate assessment and securing of high-risk sites.
Work was carried out across multiple locations simultaneously with priority given to the worst-affected areas, including:
Clearing blocked roads
Securing unsafe public areas
Managing risks within parks and accessways
“They showed very strong situational awareness… sometimes being first on site and already managing safety.” – Parks Team, Whanganui District Council
Approach
Tree Truck provides ongoing expert advice, tree management and emergency response services under contract.
Work includes:
Responding to CRM-driven requests from the public
Managing tree safety risks across parks, roads, and public access areas
Supporting Council teams with prioritisation for budgeting purposes and expert advice which can help with decision-making in relation to trees
Coordinating with other external contractors where required
Jobs are scheduled and completed with minimal need for follow-up with direct and clear communication managed directly between Tree Truck, Council, and where required, the public.
“If I ring them with a problem, it gets scheduled and it gets done.” – Parks Team, Whanganui District Council
Storm response event
A number of jobs required coordination with other contractors and infrastructure providers.
This included work where:
Tree damage impacted infrastructure assets
Multiple parties were required on-site
Timing and sequencing needed to be aligned
Tree Truck worked alongside these contractors to coordinate site access, manage safety requirements, and complete work efficiently.
Established working relationships and clear communication enabled effective delivery, even under increased demand.
Coordination and Delivery
At peak workload, demand exceeded normal operating capacity - typical for an event of this scale.
Work was managed through:
Prioritisation of high-risk sites
Allocation of additional resource to lower-priority tasks
Continued delivery of scheduled work alongside response activity
Despite the volume and complexity:
Public safety risks were addressed promptly
Key public spaces were reopened within expected timeframes
Managing Peak Demand
Outside of event response, Tree Truck supports Council through consistent day-to-day delivery.
This includes:
Timely response to public enquiries and service requests
Clear communication and documentation where needed
Direct engagement with affected stakeholders where required
Escalation only where necessary
The result is a reduction in contractor management overhead for Council teams.
“They’re reliable, responsive, and easy to build a trusted relationship with.” -– Parks Team, Whanganui District Council
Ongoing delivery
Tree Truck provides a reliable delivery model across both routine and high-pressure environments.
This results in:
Timely resolution of tree-related issues
Effective management of safety risks relating to trees
Coordinated delivery alongside other contractors
Reduced operational pressure on Council teams
Proven delivery in high-pressure, public-facing environments where safety, coordination, and response time are critical.
